How to Choose Your Electric Bike?

Now that you know the best electric bikes of the moment, here’s all you need to know to make your choice.

One of the best electric bikes available

Like most people about to buy an electric bike, you’re probably seeking the best quality/performance/range/price ratio because, indeed, an electric bike is an investment and it’s best not to make a mistake. The challenge is that there are over 750 models and dozens of technical options with complex names.

Perhaps you’re one of those who believed bikes could only be purchased in stores and encountered someone who knew less than you did and/or someone who tried to sell you a bike for $7400. I’m familiar with this scenario because I’ve been there myself.

That’s why I’ve spent the last 2 years comparing electric assist bikes and developing a ranking of gems under $2200 that rival bikes costing $7400.

An Electric Bike Adapted to Your Use

First, note that the terms “e-bike,” “electric bicycle,” or “electrically assisted bicycle” are synonymous. One way to guide your choice when buying an electric bike is to consider your primary need, i.e., how you will use the bike 80% of the time.

Electric Folding Bikes

Portability is one of the greatest advantages of this type of bike. It’s easy—you can take it anywhere! Its foldable design means it requires minimal storage space, making parking a breeze. If you’re a city dweller seeking a practical bike for your daily commute, a folding electric bike is a must-have!

Electric Mountain Bikes

vtt a assistance electrique

Electric Mountain Bikes (MTBs) are ideal for off-road adventures, whether in mountains, fields, or forests, but they can also perform well in urban environments. They come in varieties equipped with full suspension, front suspension, or no suspension at all. The latter allows for faster trail rides, particularly for enthusiasts of extreme sports. For those seeking a mountain bike with a more rugged appearance for rugged terrains, electric fat bikes are worth considering.

Electric City Bikes

Road bikes, also known as “electric city bikes,” encompass racing and leisure bikes. They feature relatively narrow tires and a forward-inclined shape. The saddles are also narrow. While they are lightweight and easy to maneuver, they are not suitable for rough terrain or off-road adventures.

Electric Beach Cruisers

If you seek style and comfort, the electric beach cruiser is the perfect choice. It’s designed for relaxed, everyday riding. Key features typically include a wide seat and high handlebars that tilt toward the rider, promoting a slightly reclined position. They tend to be bulky and heavier compared to other electric bike types, making them ideal for leisurely rides without a need for speed.

Electric Cargo Bikes

The best electric bike in the cargo category?

As its name suggests, the cargo bike is designed for transporting goods, including heavy items. It often comes with accessories such as child carriers and luggage racks for added convenience.

Do You Own Have a Great Non-Electric Bike?

Have you considered the option of an electric bike kit? The concept involves adding a motor to your existing bike to convert it into an electric bike. It’s a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option, assuming you have some DIY skills. Check out our electric bike kit guide for more information.

Which Motor is Best for Your Electric Bike?

When selecting your electric bike, it’s crucial to consider the type of motor it uses, as this significantly influences its performance. As you’ll discover, the motor’s location plays a vital role in how the bike behaves.

Center Drive Motor (or “Bottom Bracket Motor”)

bafang bbs02 moteur velo
The best electric bike kit

In this type, the motor is positioned in the middle of the frame, at the bottom bracket. Because the motor isn’t integrated into the wheel, it operates quietly. Additionally, being situated at the bike’s center of gravity provides a more balanced and natural riding experience with each pedal stroke.

In-Wheel Electric Motor (or “Hub Drive Motor”)

There are two types: the front hub motor and the rear hub motor. This type of motor is often favored by many due to its simplicity and affordability. It’s worth noting that having the motor in the rear wheel creates a sensation of being “pushed,” resulting in a comfortable and enjoyable ride. However, it may take a few hours to become accustomed to this sensation.

Choosing the Right Battery for Your Bike

The electric bicycle battery, the source of its power supply (and power), is a crucial component that shouldn’t be overlooked. If the bike demands more power for operation, it also means that a more robust battery is necessary to maintain its performance. There are various factors to consider when selecting the right battery:

Battery Life

The higher the Wh, the longer the battery life. Try to assess your usage patterns to determine the capacity that best fits your requirements. To minimize inconvenience, opt for a bike equipped with a lithium-ion battery (the top choice!) that provides all-day longevity.

batterie dakota

Battery Placement

The placement of the battery can also be a criterion, affecting weight and aesthetics. It’s commonly situated in the down tube or seat tube, which enhances center of gravity for better balance during rides. This contrasts with batteries mounted near the wheel, offering a more compact look and space-saving design.

Battery Charging Time

It’s crucial to consider the time required to charge the battery to full capacity. Trust me, there’s nothing more disheartening than waiting ages before you can use your electric bike. Typically, it takes 3 to 5 hours to recharge most batteries once they’re empty. Remember, higher battery capacity means longer charging times. You’ll soon adapt to charging it overnight. 😉

Battery Quantity

Some electric bikes come with 2 batteries. They function like a relay: when the first one is depleted, it draws energy from the second. If your chosen bike has only one battery, fret not: you can later add a second one yourself.

Longevity

Pay close attention to the recharge cycle, indicating how many times you can fully recharge the battery. Most bikes offer a battery with 500 recharge cycles, approximately equal to two years of average use.

Various factors affect this, including the rider’s weight and terrain conditions. Off-road usage may reduce battery lifespan.

Safety: The Critical Factor

Safety is paramount when riding an electric bike, so focus on features that ensure a safe and healthy ride.

Braking is particularly vital. High-quality brakes are essential, especially since most electric-assist bikes can reach high speeds and support heavy riders. If the brake system is of subpar quality, it could jeopardize your safety. We suggest opting for disc brakes.

The disc brakes of my Rad Runner

Some bikes are equipped with regenerative braking, which conserves battery power every time you apply the brakes. Lighting is another essential safety feature. It’s imperative to be visible when riding your bike. Many electric bicycles come with integrated lights, which are convenient for evening or nighttime rides.

Seeking Comfort?

The best electric bikes come equipped with features designed to maximize your comfort on every ride. A key aspect of comfort is ease of mounting and dismounting, which is facilitated by a lightweight frame. Consider the bike’s size and height to avoid storage issues.

Additionally, pay attention to the type and construction of the seat. It should feature ample cushioning to absorb shocks during rides. Ensure that the seat size matches your height and weight. Opt for a seat with a low height to prevent strain on the hips and knees.

Also, ensure that the handlebars are positioned for comfortable reach. Pay attention to grip and shape. Avoid excessive forward leaning, as it not only causes discomfort but also shifts weight to the front, compromising safety.

Noteworthy Options

  • Tires: Besides offering varying grip on different surfaces, tires can impact speed, suspension, and handling.
  • LCD Display/Meter: Most electric mountain bikes feature a backlit LCD display mounted on the handlebars. It shows your riding distance and speed.

Why Choose an Electric Bike?

Some opt for electric bikes to cover longer distances or ride faster than their fitness level allows, or to transport heavy loads on a conventional bike. For instance, I have a friend who does all her shopping on an electrically assisted cargo bike, allowing her to live car-free in Paris.

Others prefer electric bikes for their ease in commuting to the office without breaking a sweat or because they’re not as fit as they once were but still want to stay active.

While there are numerous reasons for using electric bikes, there’s one unanimous agreement: riding one is incredibly enjoyable. The experience begins with the swift acceleration provided by the assistance, making you feel like a professional cyclist. With just a few pedal strokes, you can reach speeds of up to 15.5 mph, faster than most cars – it’s almost like having a superpower!

Plus, tackling hills becomes effortless; instead of struggling, you ascend effortlessly, thanks to the motor.

Recap: Top Electric Bikes of 2024

The best electric bikes, like the ones we’ve highlighted at the top of this page, offer significant environmental benefits by emitting zero toxic gases, thus safeguarding both humans and the environment. As you’ve noticed in this comparison, a high-quality electric bike could serve as a viable alternative to owning a second car, offering a more enjoyable means of transportation. In time, it may even replace your primary vehicle. Who knows?

Select a style that fits your requirements. Factor in power, performance, comfort, and safety. Above all, avoid simply opting for the cheapest option to ensure long-lasting satisfaction and superior quality.
