What is an hybrid e-bike?

An hybrid is a mix of a mountain e-bike and racing e-bike. It combines the advantages of both bikes. This type of electric bike is versatile: it can be used very well on tarmac or on dirt roads, even if it is not strictly speaking a MTB 😀! An electric hybrid bike is ideal for everyday use but also for leisure and walks, because their comfort is well suited to ride many kilometers. This type of bike can be used both by men and women (though some bikes are perfect for women).

What are the characteristics of an hybrid e-bike?

An e-bike has a thin, light frame and rather thin and large-diameter wheels, like racing bikes. We are also very close of a mountain bike in certain aspects : wide MTB tires, straight handlebars and the shape of the frame allows you to have a straight position on the bike, which is ideal to avoid back problems. In summary :

  • A light and thin frame
  • Wide mountain bike tires
  • 28 inches wheels
  • Straight handlebar
  • Flat pedals
  • Disc brakes
  • An electric motor at the top on the climbs
  • A rear luggage rack

How to choose the right electric hybrid bike?

Frame, wheels, tires, motors… I will explain in detail everything you need to look at before buying your hybrid e-bike.

The framework

The shape of the frame is quite similar to that of the mountain bike. It allows you to have a straight back (thus avoiding back pain!) and to see the road clearly. This type of frame is suitable for both men and women but also very popular with seniors. To make it as light as possible, the frame of an electric hybrid bike is often made of steel or aluminum. This design maximizes comfort while maintaining good speed and maneuverability.

The flat handlebar is also typical of electric hybrid bikes. This type of handlebar comes from mountain biking, again for better handling. Small detail that makes the difference: the pedals of an hybrid bike are flat to facilitate the ascent and descent.

The suspensions

An electric hybrid bike is often equipped with front suspensions. They will bring you a lot of comfort on all types of paths. Beyond the suspensions, an hybrid e-bike is equipped with mountain bike tires which absorb a good part of the irregularities of the roads.

The tires

Hybrid bikes are equipped with mountain bike type tires for very good grip on all terrains (earth, mud, gravel.) Hybrid bikes are usually equipped with fairly thin 28-inch wheels. A size that brings comfort and solidity. The rims are designed to be lightweight. As I already said, you can ride on any type of road even though it is not a mountain bike.

The brakes

Advice: choose an electric hybrid bike equipped with disc brakes! They are much more efficient than drum brakes or rim brakes, especially with an electric bike. They are effective – whether the weather is great or not – which is important! On the road: safety first, so again, choose disc brakes! The best disc brakes are hydraulic brakes because they are the most powerful and require the least maintenance. It also cost a bit more than hydraulic cable brakes.

Customization

You can of course completely customize your electric hybrid bike. It’s even a bit of a tradition among riders. The hybrid e-bike is basically a fairly thin and minimalist bike so everyone adds the accessories they need according to their environment: lights, mudguards, bags…

The engine

An hybrid e-bike is supposed to help you on all types of roads and to help you enjoy even more! The hybrid is made to help you climb any climbs (even the steepest ones) without getting too tired. The electric assistance is also very pleasant to cover longer distances, without sweating like an ox! To sum up this type of e-bike is the best of both worlds (racing bike and the mountain bike) :

  • A lighter bike than the average, which allows you to go faster
  • A “MTB position”: to have your back straight and your body raised
  • An electric motor to go further and faster, without getting too tired

Mountain e-bike vs Hybrid e-bike : which one to choose ?

If you’re like the vast majority of cyclists who use a bicycle to get from one point to the other, to leave the car aside or to do some exercise, then an hybrid e-bike will be perfect for you. You can use it on a daily basis without asking yourself too many questions about the road you are going to take. If you are looking for a bike for sporty or intensive use on rough paths, then I advise you instead to choose an electric mountain bike.
